The Shiba is a very porportionate dog with a height to length ratio of 10 to 11. Males run from 14.5 to 16.5 inches tall, with females ranging from 13.5 to 15.5 inches. The weight varies according to height up to 25 lbs (I've heard of some up to 30 lbs).
It's a medium boned, moderately compact, agile, furry dog that looks like a miniature Akita.
It has a dense double coat similar to that of a huskey. Colors vary from Red, Red Sesame, Black-tan-white, Black, and Cream. White and Cream shadings are present of the legs, belly chest and part of the face and tail.
This breed is generally hardy and healthy with few genetic weaknesses.
The Shiba Inu was originally bred to flush birds and hunt small game.
Shiba means " Brushwood" and " Small"
